BARRY S. ENGEL, ESQ.
Profile: Barry S. Engel has been an expert witness and/or consultant in a number of litigation matters involving trusts. He has been cited numerous times by other professionals in their writings, and he has been cited as an authority in numerous publications.
Areas of Expertise: Mr. Engel's areas of expertise in his law practice include estate planning with a view toward the lifetime protection of the estate (“integrated estate planning”), offshore planning, conventional domestic estate planning, and international estate planning. Mr. Engel and his law firm are known worldwide for their practice as concerns the asset protection component of integrated estate planning. His writings and lectures have contributed in large part to the broad use of asset protection concepts by planners and how these concepts are today integrated with traditional estate planning. This includes the adoption by various jurisdictions of statutory law designed to lend certainty to the planning concepts involved in asset protection trusts and integrated estate planning. Mr. Engel is one of three co-authors of protective trust legislation as enacted by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in 1989, the first asset protection- specific trust legislation of its kind, which legislation has served as a model for many other offshore jurisdictions as well as a model for onshore trust legislation. Mr. Engel has also consulted with a number of other foreign jurisdictions regarding similar legislation.
Publications: Mr. Engel is the author of the Asset Protection Planning Guide, now in its third edition (December 2013), as published by CCH Incorporated, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Engel’s other professional writings have been extensive and include: (1) Consulting Editor for the International Offshore and Financial Centres Handbook; (2) Consulting Editor for The Offshore Institute Membership Directory & Analysis for the 1996-2000 editions; (3) Author of a column “Shores” while he served on the Editorial Advisory Board of Conspectus Current, a professional publication for planners; and (4) Member of the Editorial Board of London-based Trusts & Trustees and International Asset Management. Mr. Engel has been a contributing author to a variety of professional publications for the past 25+ years and he continues in such capacity.
Barry Engel has been written about or quoted by some of the business and professional world’s publications of highest regard, including The Economist, Business Week, the New York Times, American Bar Journal, National Bar Journal, Wall Street Journal, Worth, The Street, Investor’s Business Daily, and Forbes. He was designated a 2011 Colorado Super Lawyer, which is a peer-review distinction bestowed upon only 5% of the lawyers in the State of Colorado.
Professional Affiliations: Mr. Engel’s past appointments include: (1) Presidency of the Isle of Man-based Offshore Institute (1992–1997); (2) the Executive Committee of the Offshore Institute (1992–2003); (3) the Editorial Board of UK-based Trusts & Trustees; and (4) Consulting Editor of The International Offshore and Financial Centres Handbook and of The Offshore Institute Membership Directory and Analysis (1996–2000). Mr. Engel also founded and served as the Consulting Editor of Shore to Shore, an offshore industry magazine published calendar-quarterly by Highbury House Communications PLC, London.
He is a member of the International Bar Association, and of the American, Colorado and Denver Bar Associations.
Speaking Accomplishments: Mr. Engel is a gifted and talented speaker who has presented at hundreds of programs for professionals and laypersons alike over the past 25+ years. The great majority of these programs have qualified for professional continuing education credit. In September of 1998, he was presented with the Excellence in Education Award by Professional Education Systems, Inc. ("PESI") - a distinction bestowed on less than 2% of the 1,000+ speakers in the PESI network.
Education: Mr. Engel received his law degree (with honors) in 1979 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and his Bachelor of Science degree in business (with an accounting emphasis, magna cum laude) in 1976 from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
